An alternative to the analysis of resting-state EEG in terms of frequency power modulation are EEG microstates, which represent short-lasting periods of synchronized activity of large-scale brain networks (Khanna et al. 2017 Morcom and Fletcher 2007), several studies have shown important age-related differences in spontaneous EEG oscillations recorded when individuals are at rest (for a recent review see Anderson and Perone 2018).
